Steve's Ordination

Revd. Steve Alston- Ordained at last!

It has been great to start working in the Benefice of Baschurch, Weston Lullingfields and Hordley and thank you so much for your friendly welcome and prayers. The current pandemic certainly makes things a bit different to normal, my ordination was delayed for three months and being an unordained ‘curate’ has had its challenges. Not having the ‘badge’ of the collar has meant that I often had to explain who I am to local people and I must admit that with no formal ordination service the beginning of my new life as your curate felt a bit messy.

In Lichfield Cathedral on Saturday 26th September my ordination as Deacon finally happened. This also was different to usual and filled with ‘Covid safe’ restrictions. Instead of 500 people in the cathedral there were only 30 of us and I was only allowed two guests. We were all socially distanced, masked and not allowed to sing (although the Bishop said we could hum if we wanted!). Poor Bishop Michael had to sanitise his hands over 20 times during the service, but he did a great job in leading us.

Despite all this Covid weirdness I really sensed God’s presence as we worshiped. The words of the service are both beautiful and challenging and bring home my role of helping God’s people in the Benefice to ‘make Christ known’ and proclaim the story of God’s love in ‘word and deed’. Most important for me was the prayer for the Holy Spirit to fill me. I certainly need as much of God’s spirit as possible if I am to do the job of being your curate- so please keep praying for me!

On the morning of my ordination I read the following words about Jesus as he lived in a world that was filled with fear and disease.

‘Seeing the people, he felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore, beseech the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into his harvest.”’ (Mat 9.36-38)

These words are so relevant to the pandemic situation in which we live today. Jesus is with us and at work even when things are difficult or odd. This is his promise and I am really excited to be in the Benefice and joining in with Revd. Linda and the rest of God’s people in helping spread the transformation that comes when we let Jesus into our lives and communities.

Harvest with a difference!

We were blessed with a beautiful sunny morning and so as planned the harvest festival service was able to take place outside. Social distancing was much easier although singing was still not allowed.

LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS

There was much singing and flag waving when Shrewsbury Light Orchestra came to All Saints’ for a great Last Night of the Proms concert. Many thanks to everyone, whether members of the orchestra or audience, for braving the floods and turning out on such a wet night!

The Disappearance of Eliza Grey

This humorous and thought provoking play focusing on dementia was recently performed at All Saints’.

MONACO BOYS' CHOIR

On Sunday 14th July All Saints’ Church was treated to a fabulous concert by the Boys’ Choir of Monaco Cathedral. This really was very special and we were so fortunate that the boys were able to fit us in to their busy UK schedule. The choir of 27 boys, under the expert guidance of Pierre Debat, performed a wide repertoire including pieces by Brahms, Saint-Saens and Couperin. Towards the end, the audience was encouraged to join in with Parry’s Jersusalem and finally the concert finished with the well known ‘Do-Re-Mi’ from The Sound of Music. The choir were then heading towards Aberdeen via Leeds. Bravo Boys! A brilliant evening and many thanks to Janet Redler Travel for allowing the choir to visit Shropshire!

CUCUMBER SANDWICHES!

A very civilised afternoon tea was held on a Saturday afternoon in May!

SPRING LUNCH

A very successful Spring lunch was held at Weston Lullingfields Village Hall. This was a joint function organised by Weston and Baschurch but welcomed members from all 3 churches and members of the local community.

ALL THINGS LIGHT!

A group of creative children joined in with some Ready, Steady, Stick activities on the theme of light. Mini lighthouses were produced along with decorating firework lollipop biscuits. Some children helped to carve out pumpkins, decorate jars and then light them with battery power tea lights as well as threading bracelets with luminous glow in the dark beads.

As you can see from the photos below I think that everyone had fun - they definitely all made a mess!

HOSPICE CONCERT

On Saturday 29th September Shrewsbury Concert Band came to All Saints’. A member of the audience described it as ‘a delightful evening’ and it seems that everyone enjoyed themselves. The band played a wide range of music to cater for everyone’s taste - young and old! I would like to thank them for performing free of charge and I know that members travelled from as far as Shifnal and Market Drayton. Including the raffle a sum of £717 was raised. We are grateful to everyone who supported this event.

'FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH'!

All Saints’ Baschurch beautifully decorated for the recent harvest celebrations! Thank you to the talented group who put this all together!

ALL SAINTS' CHOIR RIDE & STRIDE!

Members of All Saints' Choir decided to take part in the Shropshire Historic Churches Ride & Stride on bikes. The Trust had donated generously to the recent tower restoration.  A total of 20 miles was covered and churches visited were Baschurch, Little Ness, Ruyton XI Towns, Great Ness, Shrawardine & Montford.  Many thanks to all those who sponsored us.  A fun day was had by all, helped by the delicious refreshments that were provided by the various churches!

A MILESTONE IS REACHED!

On Sunday 1st July members of the Benefice of Baschurch and Weston Lullingfields with Hordley welcomed the Bishop of Shrewsbury Mark Rylands to All Saints' Baschurch.

It was an exciting morning for all, as our much loved and hard working curate Deborah Coatsworth was to be licensed as Associate Minister.  Over the past five years Deb has worked so hard to reach her goal - she was working full time as a midwife at the start of her training as well as being a wife and mother.  To add to this she also steered us all through the interregnum before Linda was appointed.  We were all thrilled to share this special service with Deb and her family and amongst the gifts she was given were a beautiful stole and a delicious birthday cake masterminded by Mary Cox and her daughter Emily.  At the end of the service a presentation was made to Bishop Mark who is leaving his Shrewsbury post to return to parish ministry in Devon and Linda wished him well and thanked him for the support he has given our parishes during his time as Bishop of Shrewsbury.
